'Bear'glary in ’Burg: Hungry bear breaks into candy store Re-Print as published by  RACHEL OSBORN of The Mountain Press newspaper   view slideshow (2 images) GATLINBURG — Employees at Ole Smoky Candy Kitchen were in for a surprise Wednesday morning, as they found themselves greeted by a bear upon entering the shop. "It was scary inside here," said supervisor Harold Wright as he motioned around the shop. "I was afraid it might do something (or harm someone). I was glad to get the bear out of here. I hope it doesn't come back." When Gwatha Kear and Dorothy Robbins arrived at the kitchen in the early morning hours, they entered as they always do — through the back door. The pair weaved their way through the candy-making equipment, before turning on an overhead hood light. "We turned the light on and saw candy on the floor," Kear said. "We could tell something had been here, but we didn't know what. Never in a million years did ...

Credit/Debit Cards Compromised at Wilderness Resort in Sevierville,TN

This is a reprint of a Sept. 12 Bloomberg Business Week article: A Wisconsin company that supplies arcade equipment and vending machines to businesses says hackers broke into its credit-card-processing systems at resorts in Tennessee and Wisconsin. Vacationland Vendors Inc. said Monday that up to 40,000 credit and debit cards used in its arcades may have been affected. Company spokesman Bill Bray says the resorts are Wilderness Waterpark Resort in Wisconsin Dells and the Smokies Resort in Sevierville, Tenn. The company says it shut down its card-processing systems at both arcades when it discovered the March 22 breach. The company is issuing warnings to patrons who used a credit or debit card at either arcade between Dec. 12, 2008 and May 25, 2011. Vacationland Vendors advises those patrons to be on the lookout for unauthorized activity on their bank statements and credit-card bills. One would think that the breach would have been detected long before now!  All th...

Area Pigeon Forge, TN Attraction Dixie Stampede puts show horse down

HORSES ATTRACT ATTENTION FROM PASSER BYs: If you are like myself and own horses, please post signs on your property telling "visitors" to refrain from touching the horses.  Since we never know if passers-by have come in contact with an infected horse, it is better to be safe than to be putting your horse down.

TN foreclosure filings slide up 28 percent from Q4 2010

Image
Long Term Rental Market taking precendence Foreclosure filings ( default notices, scheduled auctions and bank repos ) were reported on 9,777 Tennessee properties during the first quarter of 2011, up 28 percent from the fourth quarter of 2010 but 18 percent below the level reported for the same quarter last year, according to the latest RealtyTrac U.S. Foreclosure Market Report. "Weak demand, declining home prices and the lack of credit availability are weighing heavily on the market, which is still facing the dual threat of a looming shadow inventory of distressed properties and the probability that foreclosure activity will begin to increase again as lenders and servicers gradually work their way through the backlog of thousands of foreclosures that have been delayed due to inproperly processed paperwork," stated James J. Saccacio, RealtyTrac's CEO . According to Great Smoky Mountain Association of Realtors in Sevierville, Tennessee , 2010 reported 408 total reside...

Sevierville, Tennessee local camps out for Royal Wedding

Image
East Tennessee Realty Group in Sevierville, Tennessee is also home to Great Cabins in the Smokies, Managed by Marty Huddleston.  Marty's daughter Rachel, 19, is caught "staking her claim" on Clapham Common, a park in South London in anticipation of the Royal Wedding. Wow...really Rachel?  A curling iron???   One article referred to her curling iron as "hair tongs"!  Never heard of hair tongs...I guess they never heard of a curling iron.  My only question, "Where were you planning to plug in the curling iron, Rachel?" All jokes aside, we love our Rachel and are very proud of her accomplishments.  She has a chance that few around here have!  She is studying in Prague through an exchange program from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Way to go Rachel!!!!
